What's An Estate?

Your Estate

In Canada, your estate is everything you own and owe at a specific moment in time.

Your estate can include:

  • Your bank accounts, savings, investments, and pensions
  • Your home, cottage, or other real estate
  • Your car and personal belongings
  • Your digital assets (online accounts, photos, cryptocurrency, etc.)
  • Any debts, such as mortgages, loans, or credit cards.

You don’t need to be wealthy or older to have an estate. If you live in Canada and own anything at all, you have an estate.

Why Understanding Your Estate Matters

Your estate matters because it reflects the life you are building and the responsibilities that come with it. Understanding your estate, including its components, is crucial during your lifetime and beyond.

Your estate is not just something that exists when you're gone; it’s the result of the financial and personal decisions you make throughout your life. It includes what you own, what you owe, and how those pieces fit together.

Understanding your estate helps you see your full financial picture and recognize how today’s decisions affect tomorrow.

During your lifetime, understanding your estate is essential because it helps you to:

  • See your full financial picture in one place
  • Make informed decisions about saving, investing, and debt
  • Set financial plans to grow and preserve wealth
  • Make choices that are consistent with your values and priorities, such as supporting family or causes you care about
  • Understand what will eventually need to be managed by your loved ones

Your estate evolves as your life changes, and understanding it is the foundation for meaningful planning and thoughtful, intentional decision-making.

When you understand your estate, you’re better equipped to make intentional decisions—rather than reactive ones. Your estate reflects your life, your priorities, and your choices.

Understanding your estate is the first step toward being prepared and taking control.
